Playa Grande, Vieques, Puerto Rico
If you love walking on the beach, Playa Grande ought to be on your must-visit list. You can start your walk at Playa Grande, and walk all the way to Playa Negrita (Negra). As you walk, you’ll feel like part of a magazine photo shoot. The scenery and feel of Playa Grande are as its name suggests, very grand. You won’t find crowds at this beach even on high season, but you may have the company of friendly pelicans and gentle Paso Fino horses galloping along the shore. Playa Grande and the walk towards nearby beaches best captures “the Caribbean the way nature intended it to be”… natural, wild and free.
At Playa Grande you’ll find the most unique sand on the island. The sand is very coarse, made up of an artsy collection of broken shells, coral stones, and tiny soft pebbles. Along your walk, you’ll see unique little treasures from the sea, a tiny shell that catches your eye will make the perfect souvenir to spark moments in Vieques. As you hold hands with your loved one, you’ll feel the caress of the breeze, your feet will walk on sand that gradually changes from golden to soft sparkly black.
Boulders serve as seats with marvelous views of the endless blue horizon, and pelicans gliding with the wind.
The scenery is breathtaking… rock walls, beautiful boulders…
cozy spots for taking a break from the sun with your loved one…
with sights of the mountains in the distance…
it’s really peaceful at the mouth of the lagoon as it gently flows into the ocean…
Nearby you can explore the ruins from the historic Sugar Plantation. In Vieques, beauty seems to have no end, no matter where you go, you will find beauty rivaling any other island in the Caribbean.
Roads have slowly changed over the past 10 years, the road was much narrower, a 4 wheel drive was almost necessary. Today the beach is more accessible, although it is considered an improvement and we ought to be happy, it is the reality of how the island is changing. Make sure you get here soon before it changes too much.
