Playa Grande Sugar Plantation Ruins

Located on the western coast of the island are the Ruins of Playa Grande Sugar Plantation.  The Plantation has been claimed by lush tropical vegetation embracing the brick walls.  The plantation was closed in the 1940s after the lands were expropriated by the Navy.  Vieques had five sugar mills/plantations, production, and export of sugar was the main and only industry on the island.  Workers worked long days with just 50 cents pay for the day.
