Located on the western coast of the island is the Ruins of Playa Grande Sugar Plantation. The Plantation has been claimed by lush tropical vegetation embracing the brick walls that were closed in the 1940’s after the lands were expropriated by the Navy. Vieques had five sugar mills / plantations, sugar was the main and only industry. Workers worked long days with only 50 cents pay.
Tours of Playa Grande Sugar Plantation Ruins
Tours are given by the Conservation Trust Museum in Esperanza, contact them if you would like a tour 787-741-8850, reservations are required.
If you would like to visit on your own the entrance is to the west of the ROTHR facility near Playa Grande Beach. You can visit the ruins by bike or walking through the trail starting at the road. Please respect this historic landmark by not removing any artifacts from the site or depositing any trash.
