Located on the western coast of the island is the Ruins of Playa Grande Sugar Plantation. The Plantation has been claimed by lush tropical vegetation embracing the brick walls that were closed in the 1940’s after the lands were expropriated by the Navy.  Vieques had five sugar mills / plantations, sugar was the main and only industry. Workers worked long days with only 50 cents pay.
