Every town in Puerto Rico has a plaza, which is considered the very heart and center of the town. Locals sit down to catch up on stories with friends as they play a game of dominoes with great enthusiasm. Don’t be shy and see if they allow you to join in so you can experience the laid back attitude of island living.
From driving by, the plaza may not seem like much to you, just a few benches, a stage and a monument… but for Puerto Ricans the plaza truly has a deep meaning to the people. Many cultural activities are celebrated here, El Dia de Reyes (Three Kings Day), the lighting of Christmas lights is celebrated here, La Fiestas Patronales (Patron’s Festivities), and important buildings such as the Mayor’s Office, The Main Catholic Church among others surround the plaza. We invite you to visit a Panaderia (one of the bakeries), get it to go and then come to the plaza, sit down and eat lunch here, you may feel the warmth of the town at the plaza.
