Esperanza Beach, Vieques Island, Puerto Rico

A Beach of Hope & Beauty

Playa Esperanza is one of the local’s favorite spots for children and families.  This picturesque beach is located on the south side of Vieques on El Malecon (The Strip).

Esperanza Beach is the only beach location in Vieques with places to eat, hotels, small inns and restroom facilities within walking distance.  Most tour operators also depart from this point making it the most convenient place to stay.  For those that want accommodations without the need for a car rental, a place near Esperanza Beach is ideal.  You can take a long walk on the beach going west which would take you all the way to Playa Grande and pass Playa Negrita (Black Sand Beach) during low tide.  If you head east from Esperanza Beach you can walk to Sun Bay Beach. The beach in Esperanza is a local favorite spot on Sundays, it’s a tradition for children and teens to jump off the pier for hours into the crystal clear waters.  On Sunday afternoons, jumping from the pier is tradition, this is living in Vieques, finding pleasure in the simple things.  We invite you to come on a Sunday afternoon and join the fun, you’ll go back home with a renewed more childlike spirit.

The water is clear and warm, like a pool with real schools of fish underneath.

Take a walk and head to Cayo Adentro, there’s a trail with scenic views from the top.

After dinner in Esperanza, have a seat on the pier and wait for a colorful show in the skies at sunset.  If there are locals walking around don’t be shy and say hello, Viequenses are warm and friendly and they are a great source of information.
